V.I.N - Vehicle

Since the 80's a standardised VIN system has been adopted worldwide by vehicle
manufacturers. Whilst there are some exceptions (such as Morgan and
imports like Pajero's*) the number is 17 characters long and because it is
of a uniform format, can be interpreted (read). For example, the VIN code:

if you are offered a
vehicle that does not have a 17 figure VIN - think very, very hard about the
purchase! There are vehicles out there with 16 and 18 character VIN's
and whilst they may be personal imports, the record almost certainly
contains an error. Just because the DVLA has issued a V5 for the
vehicle and this bears a 16 or 18 character VIN does NOT mean the vehicle is
legitimate.
Remember: the VIN is
on the vehicle - stamped in, on a tag and possibly in the windscreen.
It is also on the registration certificate (V5 / log book) and the vehicle
checking company will be able to confirm the record they possess. All
three must match!
