V.I.N - Vehicle Identification Number

   
 
Since the 80's a standardised VIN system has been adopted worldwide by vehicle manufacturers.  Whilst there are some exceptions (such as Morgan and imports like Pajero's*) the number is 17 characters long and because it is of a uniform format, can be interpreted (read).  For example, the VIN code:

Manufacturer Identifier: Ford Motor Company Ltd (England)
Body type: 3 Door Hatchback

Year: 1990 (some codes are used for more than one year)
Month: July
Production Sequence: (five numbers)

if you are offered a vehicle that does not have a 17 figure VIN - think very, very hard about the purchase!  There are vehicles out there with 16 and 18 character VIN's and whilst they may be personal imports, the record almost certainly contains an error.  Just because the DVLA has issued a V5 for the vehicle and this bears a 16 or 18 character VIN does NOT mean the vehicle is legitimate.

Remember: the VIN is on the vehicle - stamped in, on a tag and possibly in the windscreen.  It is also on the registration certificate (V5 / log book) and the vehicle checking company will be able to confirm the record they possess.  All three must match!
